It can be hard to know what to look for in a baby formula!

It can be hard to know what to look for in a baby formula! That's why I've got to chat with @theformulamom who is an expert in all things formula and I put together this handy overview of ingredients to look for when trying to pick the best formula for your little one.

Here's the rundown:

✨Standard formulas are great for infants who are full-term and have no known food allergies or sensitivities.

  • Lactose

  • Added whey

  • DHA

  • Prebiotics

Examples of standard formulas that meet the ingredient guidelines above include

@similac_us Pro-Advance, @bobbie and Holle Bio {my personal choice}.

✨Gentle formulas are recommended for brand-new babies, babies who have trouble digesting milk proteins, or those who struggle with digestive issues like excess gas or constipation (that go beyond normal baby symptoms).

  • Lactose

  • 100% whey or A2 milk

  • Partially hydrolyzed proteins

  • DHA

  • Prebiotics and/or probiotics

Examples of gentle formulas that meet the ingredient guidelines above include @GerberGoodstart Gentle, @enfamilReguline,@hellokabrita goat milk formula {my personal choice}, and @NaturesOneBaby's Only Dairy Whey with DHA.

✨Sensitive formulas are needed for babies who have diagnosed milk sensitivities, milk or soy protein intolerances, other food allergies, lactose sensitivity, galactosemia, or more severe digestive issues.

  • Reduced lactose or lactose-free

  • 100% whey or other protein (soy, pea)

  • Extensively hydrolyzed proteins

  • DHA

  • Prebiotics and/or probiotics

Examples of sensitive formulas that meet the ingredient guidelines above include @Gerber Goodstart Soothe, Happy Baby Organic Sensitive {my choice}, HiPP HA PRE {my choice}.

Always talk to your child's pediatrician about what formula may be right for your baby!

Disclosure: I was lucky enough to be able to breastfeed both my kids and have never needed to supplement. I support any form of feeding and did this extra research so I can help mamas out in more ways. This guide has different formula recommendations to accommodate mamas that may not have access to some or that may need a more affordable choice. When possible, chose organic formula with no rice (anything) included.
